Downtown Newbie in October

My husband and I are planning trip to Downtown Las Vegas the second week of October.

We visited the strip about 5 yrs. ago, but think we would like the downtown atmosphere.

Any advice on hotels, casinos, entertainment would be great!

Wife and I stayed downtown twice at the Golden Nugget, and were pleased with it. It%26#39;s the best hotel in town. I believe I read that there may be construction going on there. Check on that first.

Another vote for the GN. Very nice place. Their shark tank is awesome, something to see!

I have stayed at the Four Queens twice. I really enjoy the downtown atmosphere, but I was also glad to have a rental car to get to the Strip and elsewhere.

Downtown feels small to me after a day, so I like to have a car to get away and back easier.

The Golden Nugget is the class of downtown, but the Four Queens, Fitzgerald%26#39;s and others are clean and good budget alternatives. To me the Golden Nugget is more like a Strip hotel, not really the downtown atmosphere that most think of.

The Main Street Station is right up there with the best in many ways. It%26#39;s a small hotel so book early.

The property is near the Cal next to the Plaza and across from the Vegas Club.

It has a classy dining room (the Pullman Grille) a beautiful buffet room (the Garden Court) and a fun brewpub that serves up great beer and has an extensive (eclectic) menu ( the Triple 7 Brewpub) where patrons have so much fun they wear balloons for hats!

It%26#39;s a block away from Fremont Street but it%26#39;s a short leisurely block to take a stroll.

If you%26#39;re looking for a pool, a spa and pampering it%26#39;s not the place for you. If you want friendly folks to gamble with, good accmmodations and nice people on staff (from the check-in clerks to the

casino staff to the parking valets and housekeepers) you can%26#39;t go wrong.

Golden Nugget is where I will be staying next week! Went in February and chose Fremont then. All remodeled rooms and casino. Small rooms, but it was $40 a night. DT is nice because you really can get to everything easily no matter where you stay. FYI if you do choose the Golden Nugget, try Priceline. Bid on a four star property downtown (GN is the only one, so it is a safe bid!). I bid $45 for two nights Sunday and a Monday. They accepted....great price for the nicest hotel DT.

I%26#39;ll be at the Golden Nugget in 17 days, can%26#39;t come fast enough!! It will be my third trip there in 13 months. I love it. I will also be there the second week in October, but maybe at the 4 Queens or Fitz as the prices are high that week for the GN.

Make sure to watch the guy who paints with spray cans, he is amazing and there is always great live entertainment on Fremont street. It%26#39;s so easy to casino hop and play at all of them.

We love DT. We always stay at Fitz and we love the craps dealers there. We just love the atmosphere of downtown. Smaller casinos, low ceilings not so flashy etc... In fact leaving in 24 hours for the Fitz woo hoo!

Enjoy downtown! You can always take a cab up to the strip for the day to get your fix ;-)

Ihopisland,

We%26#39;re staying at the Fitz in two weeks, first time staying downtown! Can%26#39;t wait to hear your trip report when you get back!

Thanks for everybody%26#39;s help!

Adrixia--I will try Priceline. I am guessing that it works similar to Hotwire. I have never ';bid'; on hotel prices. Wish me luck.
